Loving Lotus, Lynette Lim, teaching basics, learning appreciation.

The weekend gave me a new perspective of the life of a milliner and the love of the craft.  I was headed to the Nicolas Building in Melbourne, which is a hub for everything artistic, crafty and creative.  With Lynette Lim, the Winner of the coveted Millinery Title, 'Winner, Myer Millinery Award at Melbourne Cup Carnival 2012' judged by Philip Treacy OBE as well as other distinguished Milliners and Designers, I had the pleasure of spending 12 hours of crafting my way to a Parasisal Fedora.
This is a task that after 12 hours, I did not complete and did come out with a less than fabulous hat; although I am happy with my achievement and challenged myself, I do not feel like I am a failure, more that I have better understanding of what a milliner goes through to reach perfection and know what makes a 'Master Milliner' a 'Master'.  It is not simply decorating a pre blocked base with frill and frou frou, it is pain staking ours of hand stitching and often the work machine is frown upon not to mention, GLUE GUN!
One Student did mention a glue gun, which was soon told, that everything should be stitches.
Yesterday I wrote a post on Facebook, and many were overwhelmed with gratitude of the appreciation of this craft.
I loved the engagement of mind, soul and preparing a hat although it shall take a week of tweaking before I deem it wearable, and I am sure even when 'Tweaked' Paris Kyne, shall shun me to have the ability to put such an unwearable piece on my head, but I thank my teacher, Lynette, and Louise Macdonald for giving me insight always into this craft and I thank myself for giving myself the time and patience to put myself in an others shoes or hat and learn.

Below is some of the beautiful hats by Lynette Lim from Love Lotus Millinery, not to mention her Winning Millinery for 'Melbourne Cup Carnival Millinery Award 2012'

Facebook Post,
I am always aghast at how many hats looks fantastic. To make a hat is incredibly difficult and time consuming. Milliners are more than people that stitch and sew something on your head. They are truly amazing artists that have been given a gift to adorn our heads with hats. This weekend I challenged myself to make a hat. So incredibly difficult. Next time i am asked what is the difference between paying $50 for a piece of crap and much more for a piece of wearable art. I will just put the ingredient of a hat in front of them and instructions and say, that is WHY! X

  1. A blissful week in the Nicholas Building is where first began my millinery journey.

I'm totally in awe of the work of Lynette Lim, Louise Macdonald and our other Australian millinery greats.

Thanks for spreading the word, millinery is NOT a bit of fluff and a glue gun - it's years of training and practice!
